Open File in Excel Online

If you have downloaded an Excel file from Athena or another website and you don’t have access to the Excel program, you must open it in Excel Online from Office.com. This guide will show you how to upload the File to OneDrive and open it in Excel Online.

 

  1. Download the Excel. Do not click on the download once it is finished.

    1. All downloads appear in the Downloads Folder by default. If you wish you save it somewhere else, you will need to hit Save As and choose a different location.
  2. Once you have downloaded your file, you will go to Office.com and open OneDrive. You will click on the 9 boxes in the top Left Corner and then select OneDrive.

  3. In OneDrive, you can select New to create a new Folder if you want to organize your Files a bit better. This is where we hit Upload and select Files. You’ll then find the file where you downloaded it and hit Open in the dialog box.

  4. Once the file finishes uploading to OneDrive, you can click on it and it’ll open in Excel Online.
    1. The file may say Viewing which means you cant edit it.

    2. You’ll want to double click on a Cell and then you’ll get a pop up where you’ll need to hit Edit Workbook.

    3. Another pop up will appear and you’ll hit Convert. This will turn the Excel file from a .CSV to a proper Excel file where you can then edit it.

    4. When you look in OneDrive, you’ll see two files wit the same name but different File Types. Always make sure you open files ending in .xlsx, these files allow you to edit them. The .csv files must always be converted to edit them.
